I really like this piece: the form is simple, the proportions seem to be right, but there’s enough interesting detail – flared tapered legs coming up flush with the top, breadboard ends fixed with ebony pegs – to entertain without ruffling the calm. And it’s made from elm, which is warm and fascinating and – still, these days – a bit unusual.

My clients were gutting and refurbishing a 20th Century house and, for when there are just the two of them, wanted a neat elegant place to dine in front of a large window out to the garden: this is it.
