OCTAGONAL TABLE BASE

My clients brought back this inlaid stone table top from India and asked me to design and make a new base for it, as the painted wooden legs supplied with it really didn’t do justice to the workmanship of the top.  They placed it in a newly built garden room and, as it seats two comfortably, use it regularly when the rest of the family are not at home. The aim of my design here was to complement the virtuoso craftsmanship of the top, but not attempt to compete with it, and to ensure that the table is easy and comfortable to sit at.  The chosen timber is elm, which just seemed right; the legs, and the intermediate stubs, with their inverted terminal domes, are octagonal in section, while the underside of each rail is shaped into a double ogee arch to provide a hint of Mughal flavour.
