PLYMOUTH TABLE

This was commissioned to form the centrepiece of the Quaker meeting house in Plymouth. I was welcomed to a Quaker meeting in nearby Sidmouth to help me in my preparation, and in the contemplative calm of their gathering some of the elements of this design started to suggest themselves – the tripedal base and the branching arms holding up the top.  It is made from a large ash tree that came down in a friend’s field: clean, pale wood for the base and for the top some glorious figured boards showing off the darker heart of the tree. At the centre is an inset disk of Devon slate which has a practical function as a coaster for the vase of flowers placed there for meetings.
