GAMES TABLE
“We are loving the table! Everyone admires it and it’s a joy to use.”
Fascinating to design and make, this required tardis-like construction, as three playing surfaces, plus the drawers holding all the pieces (not to mention the pull-out drinks holders), had to be fitted into a table just 12cm deep. The detailed design started with the dimensions of the chess pieces, couched in their shaped baize-lined compartments, and worked outwards from there. Made in English cherry with rosewood, ebony and ripple sycamore detail. The marquetry chess board, flanked by the names of the cities where my client had worked during his 30 year legal career, was sub-contracted to a specialist firm, as were the leather backgammon board and pieces. This piece exemplifies my characterisation of design as a process that encompasses looks, function and making.
